Press Release:
Abigail Washburn in Concert at Hilltop Hanover Farm
CHINESE-AMERICAN BLUEGRASS CONCERT IN WESTCHESTER
ABIGAIL WASHBURN PERFORMING FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY
On Friday, March 30, world-renowned musician Abigail Washburn will perform
her eclectic blend of Chinese and American folk music at Hilltop Hanover Farms
in Yorktown, NY.
After several years' immersion in Chinese culture while studying abroad,
Washburn returned to the U.S. seeking to reconnect to her own American roots
through music. Weaving threads from both cultures, Washburn took a new take on
bluegrass: singing traditional American songs in Chinese and playing traditional
Chinese songs on the banjo. The result? A richly textured and utterly unique
sound that also serves as a bridge between these two cultures.
Presented by the not-for-profit organizations Something Good in the World and
Homeland Children's Foundation, Washburn's performance in Yorktown is dedica
ted to celebrating Chinese and American heritages, with music as the common
language. Since its inception, SGITW has been promoting cross-cultural awareness
among young people as a vital ingredient to today's education. HCF, founded
by U.S. parents who have adopted Chinese children, provides support to orphaned
children in China. Proceeds from the concert at Hilltop Hanover Farm will
benefit these two worthy efforts.
"I relate strongly to the mission of Something Good in the World, as well as
the Homeland Children's Foundation," says Washburn. "I believe that if we
approach our lives with creativity and our world with an open heart and global
awareness, the beauty we hope for, will be." Washburn now performs with the
all-female bluegrass band Uncle Earl and tours China with the Sparrow Quartet
(whose members include world-famous banjoist Bela Fleck), playing traditional
Chinese music and Washburn's new songs.
