YOUTH MOVEMENT 2006
A Celebration of Youth and Culture Through Dance

Award-Winning Teen Dancers Perform Together in Charity Event — An Unforgettable Night of Dance at Peekskill’s Paramount Center for the Arts

On Monday, April 10, 2006, nationally recognized teen dancers will showcase their talent at this special event to benefit the Blue Star, a local youth movement organization. These electrifying performances embrace traditional roots, promoting cultural tolerance and forging inspiration among local teens.

Directed by well-known educator Barbara Sarbin, the dancers include:

  • Kerith Kentish, 20, and the "All Ah Wee" dancers Soca, a Caribbean style dance with African roots.
  • Itsa and Bear Shash, ages 17 and 19, expert Native American dancers from Colorado, will present traditional Eagle, Warrior, Crow Hop, and Fancy Dances.
  • Westchester’s Laya Rajan, 13, is already a seasoned classical Indian (Bharata Natyam) dancer, as is Abhijit Ngaraj of Connecticut, 18.
  • Manhattan-based Siobhan Burke, 20, has just returned from the U.S. tour of "Riverdance" and will uplift and inspire the audience with Irish step-dancing.
  • Anuar Rosuldo, 20, of the Manhattan-based group "Cetiliztli Naucampa Quetzalcoatl in Ixachitlan" will be presenting Aztec (also known as Mexica) ceremonial dance.
  • Justin Adams Pallais, 17, of NYC, dances Rhythm Tap, adding a modern edge to traditional tap.
  • For these dancers, it’s not about entertainment. For Anuar Rosuldo, it is a chance to rediscover his heritage: "The Aztec Dance opened many doors. I got to discover not only the dance and music, but the tradition, history, philosophy, ceremonies, medicine and essence of Mexican indigenous peoples. It has given me a sense of pride, dignity, respect, love, strength, and discipline."

The goal of the performance is for youth to inspire youth. "I just hope to show young people that it’s really possible, with a lot of hard work, to accomplish a lot in spite of your age," says Siobhan Burke, a sophomore at Barnard College. "I think a lot times when kids see performances and works of art, they’re always done by adults, and that makes them seem a little unattainable."

For the past two years, the Youth Movement Dancers have inspired local teens at their annual performance. This year’s expanded program promises to be a milestone, not-to-be-missed event. Video footage from Youth Movement 2004 is available for viewing, and the dancers and director are available for interviews. To arrange for viewing or interviews, please call Barbara Sarbin at 914-737-7931.
